In this image we see a blonde woman who is a horror
archetype and the fact that she is being cut into keeps to the horror
convention as she dies. The fact that she has sex before (with Steve) and that
she is the female victim also sticks with the horror convention. Another film
in which we see the blonde female victim get killed is in the film Scream
(1994) where Drew Barrymore gets killed in the first scene. In Scream, the
murder is intentional with Ghostface using a phallic knife. The weapon that is
used to kill Monica in this scene is a also phallic symbol which is used by a
male (Glen). However, while it shows he has power, he didn’t mean to kill her.
Glen is also gay and a transvestite which again shows the modern day context
has changed from older horror films. Horror often portrays sub cultural social
groups and is therefore considered to be “forward thinking”.
